Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide

If your Olympia Chimney cap is rusted through, missing, or letting rain pour into your flue, we stock and install Olympia Chimney-compatible caps across Miami, with most swaps running between $285 and $520 fully installed depending on flue size and roof access. Homeowners usually find us the same way: they notice water staining the ceiling near the chimney, or a driving rain sends an unmistakable drip down into the firebox. A missing or failed cap is the single most common cause of water damage we fix in Miami chimneys, and it’s a repair we can typically complete in one visit.

Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To

Olympia Chimney produces caps across several series lines, including the standard round and square galvanized caps, the stainless steel Valor series, and the Elite mesh-enhanced caps for larger masonry flues. The two numbers that matter when matching a cap: the outside diameter (OD) of the flue tile and the inside diameter (ID) of the liner, since an Olympia cap sized for a 6-inch liner won’t seat on an 8-inch flue even if it looks close from the ground. In Miami specifically, we recommend stainless steel over galvanized every time. The coastal salt air eats galvanized coatings in about three to five years, where a stainless Olympia cap will run a decade or longer. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Olympia Chimney, but we keep a regular stock of their standard stainless caps on the truck because they fit the majority of older South Florida masonry chimneys without modification.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water inside the firebox after rain. If you can see water pooling in the firebox floor or hear dripping inside the flue, the cap’s crown or screen has failed. On Olympia caps, the screen mesh corrodes first, then water works under the crown and down the flue tile.
  • Rust streaks on the chimney chase or crown. When a galvanized cap rusts, it bleeds orange-red streaks down the brick or stucco. This is cosmetic at first but means the cap’s structure is already compromised and water entry is close behind.
  • Debris inside the flue or firebox. Leaves, twigs, or palm fronds inside the chimney mean the screen mesh is torn. An Olympia cap with a missing screen also gives birds and rodents open access to nest, which we pull out of Miami flues every spring.
  • A cap that’s visibly loose or shifted. Heavy wind from a summer storm can shift a cap that was never properly secured with mechanical fasteners or masonry anchors. A tilted cap lets rain pour straight into the flue.
  • Strong downdraft smell when the fireplace isn’t in use. A cracked or missing cap crown changes the airflow so that flue gases can’t vent cleanly. You’ll notice a stale smoke or soot smell inside the house days after the last fire, and it points to a cap that is no longer doing its job.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Miami, an Olympia Chimney-compatible cap installation runs between $285 and $520. The lower end covers a standard stainless cap for a single flue with easy roof access. The upper end covers larger or multi-flue caps, taller roofs requiring extra ladder work, or situations where the old cap has to be cut off rather than unbolted. Every job gets a written price before any work starts, so the number on the invoice matches the number we quoted at the door. What’s included: the cap itself, proper fasteners or masonry anchors, debris removal from the flue interior, and a written guarantee on the installation. If the cap fails inside the guarantee period, we return and correct it at no charge under the 365-Day Done Right Promise.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check two things from the ground: whether the cap is visibly missing or tilted, and whether you can see rust streaks on the flue or chase. What we don’t recommend is a homeowner going up on a Miami roof. Clay tile roofs are genuinely dangerous to walk on, and a fall from even a single-story Dade County ranch is a one-way trip to the hospital. The cap itself is a straightforward swap, but getting to it and getting back down is where DIYers get hurt. If you can see the issue from the yard, snap a photo and call us at (850) 787-8597. Nathan Corliss or one of the crew can usually tell you over the phone whether it’s a simple cap replacement or something more, and the estimate is free.
