Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Miami Owner’s Guide
A Gelco chimney cap installation in Miami typically runs between $325 and $585 including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. We stock Gelco-compatible caps in the most common flue sizes on our trucks, so in most cases we can complete the job in one visit. Most homeowners discover the problem the hard way: water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace, a rusted cap that’s visibly pulling apart, or the sound of birds inside the flue. If your cap is cracked, rusted through, or missing entirely, rain and humidity are getting into places they shouldn’t be.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco builds caps to fit specific flue tile dimensions, measured outside-to-outside. The cap’s base plate has to slip over the flue tile with enough clearance to sit level, then lock down with pressure screws or masonry anchors. The common Gelco sizes we install are 8″x8″, 8″x13″, 13″x13″, and 13″x18″, though older Miami homes frequently have oddball flue dimensions that need a custom-fitted base. Before you order anything, measure the flue tile at its widest point, not the inside opening. That’s the number that matters for a Gelco cap.
One compatibility gotcha we run into all the time in Miami: Gelco caps for round flues are not interchangeable with square ones, even when the nominal inches match. A 13″ round flue liner needs a round base, and an adapter plate is a poor fix in a climate this humid. The galvanized finish on most Gelco caps will last about five to seven years near the coast; salt air accelerates rust at the weld points. Gelco does offer a stainless version, and for homes within a mile of Biscayne Bay or the ocean, we recommend stainless every time. It costs more on the front end but doubles the life.
We’re an independent chimney company that installs and services Gelco products. We’re not an authorized Gelco distributor, and we don’t carry the complete Gelco catalog. We stock what actually fails in Miami and source the rest direct.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks running down the flue tile. The galvanized coating on the Gelco cap has deteriorated, and the bare steel is bleeding onto your masonry. Once the coating is gone, pinholes form and water gets inside the flue.
- Water in the firebox after heavy rain. This almost always means the cap’s hood or mesh screen has failed. Miami’s afternoon storms dump enough water in an hour to fill an unprotected flue several inches deep.
- Debris from birds or squirrels. The mesh screen on a Gelco cap is there to keep critters out. When it’s bent, torn, or rusted through, you’ll find nesting material in the smoke chamber, and sometimes animals themselves.
- Visible cracks at the weld points. Gelco welds the hood to the legs or the mesh to the frame. In coastal air, those welds corrode first. If you can see separation, the cap is past cleaning and into replacement territory.
- A cap that moves when you push on it. Legs that were tight against the flue tile are now loose, usually from rust expansion or wind damage. A loose cap makes noise in storms and lets water wick between it and the tile.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed Gelco chimney cap prices in Miami:
- Standard galvanized cap, common flue size: $325 to $425 installed

Every Gelco cap installation includes removal of the old cap, cleaning the top course of the flue tile, test-fitting the new base, and anchoring it so it doesn’t shift in hurricane-force wind. You get a written price before we start, and a written guarantee on the work itself. If the install fails inside the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s what Nathan Corliss, who runs Ashby Chimney Miami, calls the Kingswell Guarantee. He grew up in Los Angeles, trained at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and has spent nearly three decades working chimneys in South Florida. He’s installed enough Gelco caps to know exactly which ones hold up in this climate and which ones don’t.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a ladder and your cap just needs to be re-secured, you can check the pressure screws yourself without calling anyone. Tighten them if they’re loose. But if the cap is rusted, cracked, or you’re hearing animals inside the flue, call a pro. Working on a chimney crown means standing near an open flue, on a roof, often in full Miami sun. The roof is hot, the flue tile is brittle, and one wrong move turns a $400 cap replacement into a broken tile and a much bigger masonry repair. We carry the common Gelco sizes on our trucks and can match most caps same visit.
FAQs
A standard galvanized Gelco chimney cap lasts about 5 to 7 years near the coast, less if you’re within a mile of saltwater. Stainless versions typically last 12 to 15 years. The failure point is almost always the weld between the hood and the frame, where salt air concentrates and the galvanized coating gets compromised first.
Not usually. Once the coating has failed at the welds, we can clean and repaint, but pinholes and stress cracks come back within a year. By the time a cap is visibly rusting, replacement is the honest fix. Call (850) 787-8597 and we’ll give you a straight answer about yours.
Most single-story installs are done in under an hour from setup to cleanup. Two- or three-story homes with pitch can run 90 minutes including ladder work. We do the job in one visit when we have the right size on the truck, which is most of the time for common flue dimensions.
We stock Gelco-compatible caps in 8″x8″, 8″x13″, 13″x13″, and 13″x18″ on our service trucks, both galvanized and stainless for the most common sizes. Oddball flue dimensions or specialty caps have to be sourced, which usually takes three to five business days. We also work with cap brands like DuraFlex and HeatShield when those are a better fit for the flue. Call (850) 787-8597 with your flue tile measurement and we’ll tell you on the phone whether we have it ready to install.
